In today’s busy world, it is hard to find the time to exercise, let alone daylight hours where you can run outside. Many people have schedules that require they jog at dawn, duck or even at night. If you plan to jog during the darker times of the day, there are a few additional safety issues that you need to address. The following guidelines will help keep you safe on your runs.

Choose a well lit route. Even if it is not your favorite jogging trail, always opt for a well lit route. That said, be sure to mix it up. Would-be attackers often study jogging routes when targeting a victim.

Run with a friend. It’s always preferable to run with a friend, but if you must run alone, make sure you alert someone to your plan, including route and expected time.

Carry a cell phone. If you have a cell phone, you can call authorities if you suspect anything unusual or threatening.

Run against traffic. Always run towards the cars. This will ensure you see them even if they don’t see you.
Wear a high visibility vest or jacket. Even at sunrise and sunset, a safety vest will vastly improve your visibility.

Wear a headlamp. Similar to a miner’s helmet, a headlamp will make you more visible to vehicles and illuminate the path in front of you, ensuring you do not twist an ankle or trip.

Carry identification. Keep some sort of personal identification on you on every run, be it a drivers license or ID tag. This will allow EMT’s to identify you if you are to have an accident.

Ditch your iPod. Running in the dark puts you at an immediate disadvantage, don’t add to that by cutting off your ability to hear around you. Leave your music player at home.
